"You can't collect something that isn't there!" … Part of gethan&myles' large-scale participatory project, Dreams of Leaving, and co-created with inhabitants of five former mining villages in the Bassin Minier, northern France. Via writing workshops in old people's homes, schools, knitting clubs, sports clubs, social welfare centres and pigeon-fancier clubs we collected hundreds of (sleeping) dreams from the inhabitants of this incredible – and incredibly misrepresented – community. Fragments of these dreams were released in happenings, exhibited on municipal billboards, etched in gold leaf in five nearby parks and woodlands, and used as the basis for an exhibition which reunited all the participants. These printed copies of the entire collection of dreams where shown at the exhibition and were handed out to all participants.
